The Indonesian furniture industry has shown its resilience in overcoming the impact of the pandemic. Furniture industry players are able to adapt and show significant growth. In achieving growth needs, industry players need the latest technologies that can be found at the International Furniture Manufacturing Components (IFMAC 2022) exhibition which is going to be held at the Jakarta International Expo Kemayoran on 21 – 24 September 2022. Not only serving the furniture production industry, but also presenting the wood processing machines.

"With the postponement of the IFMAC exhibition for 2 years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, IFMAC & WOODMAC 2022 is the moment that industry players have been waiting for to meet their needs," said Sofianto Widjaja, General Manager of PT. Wahana Kemalaniaga Makmur (WAKENI), the organizer of the IFMAC WOODMAC 2022 exhibition.

“IFMAC and WOODMAC 2022 will support the growth of furniture production in Indonesia by connecting local furniture industry manufacturers with high-tech machine suppliers. This collaboration will eventually raise the standard of local furniture to become international-class products that meet the demand for exports and domestic sales," added Sofianto Widjaja.

WAKENI's collaboration with Deutsche Messe, which is the organizer of the world's largest wood machinery exhibition, LIGNA, is attracting more European and other global companies to explore the Indonesian market through IFMAC. IFMAC and WOODMAC 2022 have also garnered the support of industry associations. Chairman of the Presidium of the Indonesian Furniture and Crafts Industry Association (HIMKI) Abdul Sobur said using the right technology would be a solution in competing with other countries. The use of adequate technology not only can increase the production capacity of the domestic industry, but also increase the efficiency of production costs. “To achieve the export market, Indonesian industry players must be being innovative in finding new parallel or underserved local supply channels. Therefore, we recommend them to use the advanced technology. HIMKI invites furniture industry players to attend IFMAC WOODMAC 2022 as a reference and motivation," said Abdul Sobur.

Despite the pandemic impact, Indonesian furniture and handicraft industry sector was still able to survive and even showed positive growth due to the increasing export demand, especially to the United States (US). The increase in demand from the US is the effect of the fiscal stimulus policy which is quite effective in increasing household income to support sustainable public spending on all types of goods, including imported furniture and handicrafts. The shortage of furniture and handicrafts from China in the US market, as a result of the United States-China trade war, forced the US to shift orders to countries outside China, such as Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia. The significant increase in exports in 2021 showed in rate 27.23%.

The growth in 2021 is the highest growth in the last 10 years, and this growth rate should be bigger if the need for containers and the availability of space cargo ships during the pandemic can be overcome. For the year 2022, January-March, cumulatively compared to the same period last year, exports still grew quite well at 15.87%, although the growth slightly decreased compared to 2021 exports on an annual basis.
